Liposuction/Lipoplasty aka body contouring, body sculpting, etc  Lipoplasty, also known as liposuction, removes fatty tissue to improve the contour and shape of your body. Ideally you should be at your normal, stable body weight and have localized areas of fat in the abdomen, hip, thighs, and buttock.  Liposuction is also effective in treating the arms, back, neck, legs, and occasionally selected areas of the face.   Liposuction is not a substitute for a good diet and appropriate exercise.  Although you will often lose weight after liposuction, it is not a weight loss procedure.  The best candidate has healthy, elastic skin that can shrink after surgery (this capacity decreases each year as we age).  If your skin has lost a lot of its’ elasticity, you may need a skin tightening or removal procedure such as a tummy tuck, arm tuck (brachioplasty), thigh lift, buttock lift or tuck, etc.   The procedure is done with local anesthesia (‘tumescent technique”) combined with sedation or general anesthesia.  Liposuction is usually performed with a suction apparatus designed to remove excess deposits of fat.    Following surgery, you will be placed in an elastic garment designed for use after body contouring procedures to minimize swelling, bruising, promote healing, and skin shrinkage.  You may be asked to wear the garment for a number of weeks.  Most patients can return to work in a week or two; some after only a few days.
